How to Get a Good Shower with a New Baby

April 14, 2010 //  by Chrystal Johnson

If you’re a new mom, then you understand the term, “good shower,” and just how hard it is to get one.

When Zoë was born, she never slept for longer than 20-30 minutes at a time during the day. I was happy to get 5 minutes into shower before she started to scream.

So, I quickly learned to shower with her. Before she could sit up on her own, I’d hold her while I showered. I practiced first while Brian was home so I could hand her to him to dry off and dress.

But when he went back to work, I had to adapt to doing it on my own. It was a little difficult washing my hair with one hand, but after a while it became second nature.

When she got a little older, around 4 months, I started bringing her Bumbo Seat into the shower with me and sitting her in it. She liked sitting in it, so it was perfect.

She could be with Mommy and I could get a good shower. A word of caution: do not try using a Bumbo seat in a bath… they float. But, they work great in the shower.

To this day, Zoë loves taking showers, which is great since we don’t have a bathtub where we’re living right now.

I still get very few showers on my own, maybe once a week if I’m lucky. Most of my showers these days still include Zoë, and if she’s not in with me, she’s whining at the door because she wants to be.

I have only brought Kaylee in the shower with me once so far. Zoë did not like that one bit, after all, I’m her Mommy ☺ I’m looking forward to having a bigger shower so both girls can come in with me when need be.

So, if you’re trying to figure out a way to get a decent shower consistently, try bringing your baby in with you. If you’re afraid they’ll slip, try wrapping a hand towel around them to add a little more grip.

You can also get a mesh sling to wear in the shower. I haven’t tried this out, but I thought it was a neat idea if your baby likes to be worn in a sling.
