Curious Toddler + Unattended Laptop = ?

April 12, 2010 //  by Chrystal Johnson

Brian and I are on our laptops a lot… we work from home so it’s a necessity. We also use a third laptop to watch movies since we don’t have a TV or cable. So, at just under 2 years, Zoë is absolutely fascinated by computers.

Over the weekend, I turned on the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie for Zoë to watch… no different from many days lately. I went back to the bedroom to change and feed Kaylee and not too long after, Zoë followed us.

The movie ended and I needed to do some cleaning so I asked Zoë if she wanted me to turn on another movie for her. Of course she said yes and ran out to the living room.

She was standing in front of the computer with her arms out when I got out there. She looked up at me and said, “What happened?” in her most sweet and innocent voice. I looked down and this is what I saw…

I think something like, “OH MY GOD ZOË WHAT DID YOU DO???” came out of my mouth. Brian came running out thinking that something horrible had happened to one of the girls and looked down at the computer, as flabbergasted as I was.

Something a little more colorful came out of his mouth and off to time out Zoë went so we could assess the damage.

She has popped off a key or two here or there in the past, but nothing like this. A lot of the parts are broken so we decided it isn’t even worth us trying to fix it.

We’re going to need to order some replacement parts for it and have a professional fix it. I guess that’s what happens when you leave a curious toddler (who is notorious for taking things apart) alone with a laptop!
