Why is There Dirt in the Baby’s Hair?

April 27, 2010 //  by Chrystal Johnson

Zoë holding Kaylee on the brown couch in Montevideo

I had to go to the airport to pick up a package today, so Brian stayed home with the girls. After nearly 2 hours of riding the bus then dealing with bureaucracy at the airport to get a package cleared through customs, they told me to come back tomorrow.

Frustrating, but it is what it is. At least I got a little quiet time with my iPod on the bus. When I got home, Brian was just getting ready to make Kaylee a bottle. So I took Zoë potty (lately she has only wanted me to take her potty), then I took Kaylee to feed her…

Zoë sat next to me in her normal spot on the couch and Brian sat on the other couch. Our conversation went something like this:

Me: “Brian, why does Kaylee have dirt in her hair?”

Brian: “I don’t know… she has dirt in her hair?”

Me: “Yeah, she has dirt all through her hair.”

Brian: “Hmmm… I wonder how that got there.”

Me: “Zoë, did you put dirt in Kaylee’s hair?”

Zoë: “Huh?”

Me: “Zoë, did you put something in Kaylee’s hair?”

Zoë: “Dirt.”

Me: “Why did you do that?”

Zoë: “What happened?”

Me: “Did you put something in Kaylee’s hair?”

Zoë: “Dirt.”

Brian: “Did you put dirt in your sister’s hair?”

Zoë: As she’s shaking her head yes, “Yes.”

Me: “That’s not nice, why did you do that?”

Zoë: “What happened?”

Me: “Did you put dirt in Kaylee’s hair?”

Zoë: As she’s shaking her head yes, “Yup.”

Me: “That’s not nice.”

Zoë: As she’s shaking her head yes, “I sorry.”

Me: “Please don’t put dirt in your sister’s again, okay?”

Zoë: As she has a big grin on her face, “I sorry.”

Me: “Thank you for saying you’re sorry, but please don’t put dirt in your sister’s hair again.”

Zoë: “Yup.”

The whole time both Brian and I had the hardest time not busting up laughing. It really is hard to keep a straight face with some of the things that come out of that girl’s mouth lately.
