Life with Two Under Two: My New Mantra is “Good Enough”

March 18, 2010 //  by Chrystal Johnson

Good enough. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said that to myself over the last few weeks.

  • I only got half the dishes done today – good enough
  • I only got one blog post written instead of three – good enough
  • It took me almost a week to respond to all of my emails – good enough
  • I only got to wash my hair twice this week – good enough
  • It took me three days to take the laundry down off the line – good enough

It’s not easy for me to accept this “mantra” as being okay… I’m a bit of a perfectionist. But, I know I can’t do everything right now and some things just have to give or I’ll lose my mind.

The sleep deprivation is really starting to get to all of us. I feel like I’m a zombie… half alive, half asleep, just wandering through my days. Kaylee has been sleeping a little better, waking up between 4:30 and 5:30 am to eat for the first time, giving me a 5 ½ to 6 ½ hour break between feedings. Now I just need to start going to bed before midnight.

Of course, while Kaylee is sleeping better, Zoë is not. She is the most restless sleeper ever. She tosses and turns all night, waking up frequently to make sure we’re still there. And let me tell you, that girl can kick… hard. Thank goodness Kaylee has been happy sleeping in her bassinet, at night anyways. During the day, she still insists upon sleeping on me most of the time.

While I’m just a pile of pure exhaustion, some things have been better. Kaylee has been chilling more on her own. In fact, she even fell asleep in her bouncy seat yesterday… that was a first. All it took was me bouncing her and rubbing her belly for a few minutes. I think she would actually like being in a swing – Zoë hated it. It’s interesting to observe their little differences.

Zoë has been showing more independence. She’s using the potty frequently and telling us she has to go a few times a day. Funny little side story about that… Normally she just pees in the potty, but occasionally she’ll go poo too…

Well she asked Brian to take her potty a few days ago and he walked out of the bathroom for a minute. He came back to find that she went poo. Great, right? Not so much. We have a bidet in our bathroom and she normally just dumps her pee out into it. She tried to do the same with the poo… big mess. All over the floor and in the bidet. I’m glad I’m not the one that took her potty that time!

She’s also been picking out her own clothes. She is constantly bringing me clothes to put on her, and surprisingly they usually match. Along with the independence comes the bossiness… she loves telling me what to do, which is usually where I should, “Sit!”

It’s amazing how fast her vocabulary is progressing right now. She’s using a lot of two and three word sentences like, “I hungry,” “Go potty,” Go bye bye,” “I a helper,” and she has even started saying “love you” sometimes.

So while I may be a zombie, and I may be doing just the bare minimum while repeating, “good enough,” to myself over and over, it’s all worth it to see my little girls grow up and develop their little personalities.
