Our Baby Chicks are Growing Fast!

May 2, 2013 //  by Chrystal Johnson

I last posted pics of our baby chicks when they were just a few days old. They have grown so much!

Here’s what they looks like now:

Here’s what they looked like just over 2 weeks ago:

They’ve grown so much just in the last 2 weeks! They are even starting to get tail feathers!

They are also starting to fly around their container and looking for ways to escape. I’ve caught a few of them on top of the feeder trying to look for a way to get out.

In the next few days, we’ll be moving them from this 100 gallon reservoir and dividing them between 2 of them to give them more room to roam. I’m hoping they’ll be less likely to try to escape if they have a little more room.

The girls are really enjoying having the baby chicks.

Here’s a picture of Zoë feeding one of the Barred Rocks a mealworm (they go CRAZY over mealworms).

And here’s Kaylee holding one of the Buff Orpingtons.

We’re still using the Scratch and Peck corn and soy free feed with them and they love it! We’re 19 days in and they are just about through the first 25 pound bag of starter feed.

One of their favorite treats besides the meal worms is a bowl of organic plain yogurt mixed with their feed. They didn’t know what to do the first time I gave it to them, but down they fight over getting to the bowl. They also really love kale.

We’re having so much fun with the chicks, and I’m looking forward to a few months from now when they’re providing our family with fresh eggs! I’ll post another update in a couple weeks.
