Close up of Brian and Chrystal at doctor on a Saturday

My Saturdays are Different Than They Used to Be

January 5, 2019 //  by Brian Johnson

Brian and Chrystal at the doctor's on a Saturday

Another Saturday morning Doctor’s Appointment.

I’ve learned a lot

In my life I’ve had a substantial number of ER and doctor visits due to injury. And only a couple times due to “sickness” ie appendicitis one time and then then another time for what turned out to be an ulcer.

In the past several months I’ve got to learn so much more about how the health industry works when someone is really sick.

Until Chrystal got sick, I didn’t realize doctors work on Saturdays (for office visits). I don’t know why I didn’t know it, just not something I was aware of… yet here we are.

Until recently I didn’t realize labs pretty much work 24 hours a day and even advanced labs have to send stuff off to places like the Mayo Clinic.

Until recently I didn’t realize Radiology is open 24 hours a day and they run scans late into the night.

Until recently I didn’t realize some doctors treat nurses like trash (shame on you if you’re one of those doctors).

Even though I’ve got a bunch of nurses in my family and have friends who are nurses, I really didn’t understand the amount of work, compassion, empathy, understanding and focus it must take to do that job.

Give some praise!!!

The unsung heroes are the aides, assistants, orderlies, receptionists, administrators and everyone else who helps the medical machine stay in motion.

Our medical system, without a doubt, is messed up and needs to be fixed. Insurance companies dictate the care doctors can give, it’s a sad state of affairs.

That said, my hat is off to every medical professional out there because even with the insane amount of bureaucracy all of them have to deal with… they still make it work.

Not bad, just different.

For the past many years my Saturdays started off with me being to the mountain by 7am. I for sure miss coaching the Team Bear kids. But I wouldn’t change where I’m at right now for anything.

Many of my Saturdays may be different than they used to be… so many Doctor Appointments… no worries though… I’ll get out on the mountain later today, get a couple hours in… I’ll coach Zoë and I have some other girls I’m coaching too… it’ll be cool and fun.

I’m not complaining by any means, I’m so super grateful I can be her and with for Chrystal. Just adjusting to a different way of spending my Saturdays.

Why are we here today?

The doctors still have no idea what’s wrong with Chrystal yet. We’re here to get some tests results (hopefully something positive) and to have more tests ran.

Exasperation… exasperated… fed up… yeah, we feel all of that and more without Chrystal having a diagnosis yet. No worries though, we know all of her doctors are trying their best and we’re grateful for them and the rest of the people working to keep this medical machine moving.

What have you learned about the medical machine from being sick that you didn’t know before?
