Today is exactly two months since we discovered my thyroid was swollen. So much has happened with my health crisis in that time!
Before I get into the health update, I need to share some gratitude. I have honestly been overwhelmed with the love, generosity and support we have experienced from our community. We’ve had offers ranging from prayers to taking the kids for a few hours to helping with medical expenses to providing us with a place to live.
I have no words for how grateful we are. You never really knows who has your back until you go through a crisis. I had no idea we had such a large, supportive community around us, and I’m drawing on that for strength. If you’re in that community, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Overall, I am feeling only slightly better. I’m still having a lot of symptoms that are interfering with my daily life. I am so fatigued I spend most of my time laying down and it has been two months since I’ve driven a car.
Thank goodness I am blessed with the most amazing, supportive husband in the world. I don’t know what I’d do without him!
Even on my bad days where all I want to do is lay in bed and cry in frustration, he’s there with encouraging words and a smile on his face. I can’t thank him enough for how amazing he is being through this.
Yesterday, we went down the mountain to see our functional medicine doctor to get the rest of the lab results she ran. It turns out all of those labs are normal too.
My hormone levels are good. I don’t have a magnesium deficiency. For someone with a homozygous MTHFR gene mutation (that means both copies of that gene are mutated), my B12 and Folate levels are astoundingly perfect.
All of my levels are within healthy ranges. There is nothing in my bloodwork to indicate what is going on with my health. I joked that I must be the healthiest sick person in history. It sure feels that way right now!
While I am a little frustrated that we still don’t have answers, I am grateful that we’ve been able to rule out many possible causes, including some scary ones. The functional medicine doctor has been able to rule out autoimmune conditions, endocrine issues, parasites and she’s confident it’s not cancer either (yay!).
She believes I have a viral infection hiding in my system. It was her first instinct when she saw me at the initial consultation and after seeing me yesterday and going over all of my symptoms more in depth, she believes it must be a sneaky infection like Epstein Barr.
She sent me home with a natural antiviral and a natural immune booster in addition to the supplements she already had me on to see if we can knock it down and get me to feeling better. I’m still on the strict diet to help with my digestion and to help hinder any infections, and I’m still on exercise restriction.
Tomorrow, we see the internal medicine doctor who discovered my thyroid nodules to seek testing for any infections she’s authorized to order along with a referral to an infectious disease doctor. Our functional medicine doctor believes it’s the next right step for us, so that’s the step we’re taking.
